Promise and Law
Girl Guides Australia is part of a world-wide voluntary organisation which promotes and encourages the development of girls and women. Our Mission is to enable girls and young women to grow into confident, self respecting, responsible community members. Girls and women over the age of 5 are invited to join us.
The Promise is a personal commitment you make to become a Guide. It is about yourself, personal development, your own spiritual journey and developing your value system. It is about what you do for others - the commitment to help others and a responsibility to country. The Guide Law gives you guidance and a code to live by as you strive to put your Promise into action. The Promise and Law underpins everything you do as a Guide: no matter what activity or challenge. It will enable you to grow into a confident, self-respecting, responsible community member.
The Guide Promise
I promise that I will do my best
To be true to myself and develop my beliefs
To serve my community and Australia
And live by the Guide Law
The Guide Law
As a Guide I will strive to:
- Respect myself and others
- Be considerate, honest and trustworthy
- Be friendly to others
- Make choices for a better world
- Use my time and abilities wisely
- Be thoughtful and optimistic
- Live with courage and strength
In 2011, the wording of the Promise and Law underwent an extensive review. The wording was subsequently changed to ensure that Guiding remains relevant to the girls and young women of Australia.
Some ways to explore the Promise and Law could include activities based on:
- what makes a good friend, how do you support a friend, thinking of others
- looking at other cultures and traditions
- respectful relationships
- the different types of communities you belong to or would like to support in some way
- what makes a good citizen
- what makes a good leader or who do you respect as a leader and why
