About the bilby

This rare and endangered animal used to live throughout Australia, but today it is only found in isolated patches of desert. Destruction of its habitat, competition from rabbits, predation of foxes and disease has contributed to its extreme rarity.

Rabbit- sized, it has long rabbit- like ears which are large and almost hairless. Its coat is grey, comprised of long silky hairs. A long thin black tail with a fluffy white tip completes its ensemble.

The bilby feeds on insects, reeds and fungi and can survive long periods without water. It is nocturnal and emerges from its burrow to feed.

  Look it up in a book.

• - Make your own drawing of your special animal.  Share with your Unit in an Art Show.

• - As a Patrol find out information and make a poster to tell others it’s endangered state.

• - Make a sand model of the type of country the Bilby lives in.  Dig it a burrow.

• - Find out about the Easter Bilby. Why do people buy these chocolate animals?

• - Raise funds for Zoo sponsorship of the Bilby.
