NSW in State of Emergency

19 December 2019

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has declared a state of emergency for New South Wales, for the next seven days starting today, 19 December 2019. Greater Sydney is bracing for a dangerous day of heat and fires, with temperatures set to climb as high as 45 degrees Celsius in the west and firefighters on alert for "the entire perimeter of Sydney". There are currently total fire bans for NSW and ACT.

If you are travelling, please check latest reports and be prepared to change your plans to stay safe. Follow the advice of authorities over the next week, with extra diversions and road closures to be installed.

Girl Guides NSW, ACT & NT would like to remind members and supporters of the Association’s Bushfire Management Plan and Checklist which provides a clear directive to District Managers, Property Committees and Leaders in dealing with bushfire conditions and events including catastrophic and extreme bushfire events.

A total fire ban is currently in place for NSW and ACT, while all national parks north of the Hawkesbury River are closed until further notice. The ACT Emergency Services have the ACT on a total fire ban and areas of the NT are also facing Fire Weather Warnings.

Girl Guides NSW, ACT & NT advises members and their communities per Association policy that if NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), has identified a Fire Danger Rating day, the Leaders in Charge must heed the advice of RFS in respect to Catastrophic or Extreme Fire Danger and arrange to  cancel an affected Guide meeting or event.  Information can be obtained from www.rfs.nsw .gov.au or by phoning 1800 679 737.

Girl Guides NSW, ACT & NT also adopts a leave early policy in relation to bushfire situations at our facilities. All members, family, friends and users of the facilities are required to adhere to this policy in the event of a bushfire situation.

Girl Guides NSW, ACT & NT would also like to express their gratitude and respect for all the volunteers and emergency services personnel on the ground protecting lives.

Girl Guides NSW, ACT & NT encourages all communities to stay away from bushland and to follow all messages received and act in a cautionary way until the danger has lifted.
