Bird Feeders

Age Range: 7 - 17 yrs
Time Required: 30 minutes - 1 hour

To make something useful out of a recycled item.

To encourage birds into your garden.

Materials Needed

  • An old container
  • Scissors and a cutter blade
  • Marker
  • String
  • Piece of dowel (old pencil or chopstick)
  • Paint & brush
  • Natural items & glue
  • Bird seed
  • Some pebbles

Help Required

Younger girls may need some help or adult supervision when using the blade cutter. Great care needs to be taken by Guides. 

Instructions

  1. Use a marker to plan out the openings in your container.
  2. Carefully cut into the side if your container with a blade, then use the scissors to complete the opening.
  3. Use the blade or a hole punch to make the hole for your piece of dowel.
  4. Add some string to the top of your container so it can be hung up.
  5. Your bird feeder can now be decorated with paint or natural materials.
  6. Place some pebbles in the container to help keep it stable, then the seed.
  7. Hang it in a tree in the garden.

  • Make a demonstration bird feeder before the meeting as an example.
  • Use this activity on Patrol Leaders night or for your Patrol's choice.

As a Unit Leader, How Can I Make This Activity Girl Led?

  • Girls can create their own design.
  • Leaders can suggest this activity for girls looking to make something for the garden.

As a Unit, how can we make sure everyone is included?

  • Take photos of the Bird Feeders in the garden and create a collage.
  • Over a number of weeks ask the girls to record how many and what type of birds come to the feeder and report to the Unit.
